Sleep Apnea

Nearly half of all adults snore to some extent. For many snorers, the habit is an embarrassing problem that disturbs both themselves and their partners. In some cases, snoring can be a sign of restricted breathing caused by a disorder known as obstructive sleep apnea. Whether your snoring is just a general annoyance or part of a more serious problem, the professionals at Bergenfield Dental will work to get to the root of the issue and help you get a good night’s sleep.

Snoring vs. Sleep Apnea

Snoring occurs when there is a blockage of flowing air through the passages located at the back of the mouth and the nose. Snoring usually happens when the throat is relaxed enough that it partially blocks the airway, causing vibrations when breathing takes place. Snoring tends to occur during deep sleep when the throat is as relaxed as possible. While snoring can be annoying for both the snorer and their partner, many cases do not represent serious medical conditions.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious medical problem that is often associated with heavy snoring. The condition is characterized by pauses in breathing and shallow breaths while asleep. With sleep apnea, pauses in breathing may last anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or longer. If left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to more serious conditions, including heart attack and stroke.

Treatment for Snoring and Sleep Apnea

While snoring and sleep apnea are often associated, their methods of treatment are quite different.

Snoring can usually be lessened or even eliminated entirely using some simple remedies. Some of the best methods for the treatment of snoring include:

  • Losing weight
  • Avoiding tranquilizers, sleeping pills and antihistamines
  • Limiting alcohol intake
  • Sleeping on the side rather than the back
  • Elevation of the head while sleeping

Sleep apnea is a more serious issue that usually requires some sort of medical intervention. Some treatments for chronic sleep apnea include:

  • Mouth Devices
  • CPAP Devices
  • EPAP Therapy
  • Surgery
