Inlays And Onlays

Inlays and onlays restore the appearance and function of damaged or decayed teeth without conducting a complete overhaul like a dental crown. The procedures are typically conducted when a tooth is damaged in such a way that it cannot be properly repaired with a standard filling. The end result is a tooth that is incredibly durable and looks completely natural.

Inlays and onlays are custom-fit, using impressions of the patient’s teeth. Receiving an inlay or onlay requires two visits to our practice. The first visit involves taking impressions of the teeth, while the second visit consists of applying the custom inlay or onlay to the tooth.

Inlays

With an inlay, filling material is bonded to the interior of the tooth, covering some or all of the area located within the cusps, or points, of the tooth; however, none of the cusps themselves will be covered. In most cases, inlays are performed when a tooth is too damaged to be repaired with a standard filling, but a full dental crown would be unnecessary. Since inlays are custom-fit, the end result is usually stronger than teeth that have been repaired with standard fillings.

Onlays

When a tooth is damaged in such a way that the filling must cover at least one of the cusps of the tooth, an onlay might be a good restoration option. In some cases, an onlay might cover the entire chewing surface of the tooth. When an onlay is applied, the filling material is attached to one or more of the cusps themselves. Onlays keep more of the tooth’s original structure than a full dental crown, while still restoring the tooth’s function and appearance.
