Fillings

Tooth-Colored Fillings

When a tooth has experienced damage or decay, a dental filling is used to restore its health and structure. The most common reason for a filling is to treat holes or voids in one’s teeth caused by cavities. Dental fillings work by sealing off spaces that food particles and bacteria can use to enter the inner areas of a tooth.

At Bergenfield Dental, we offer our patients tooth-colored fillings that are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. In addition to their natural-looking appearance, tooth-colored fillings are both safer and more durable than traditional metal fillings.

Also known as composite fillings, tooth-colored fillings are created from a combination of quartz and glass fillers inside a resin medium. These fillings are extremely strong, providing a tight, secure fit that adds to the overall strength of the tooth. Unlike metal fillings, tooth-colored fillings are not prone to leaking, making them much safer than their traditional counterparts.

When receiving a tooth-colored filling, the first step is to remove any decay that is present within the tooth. Once clean, the tooth is treated with the composite filling material, sealing off any voids. The material is then hardened using a special dental curing light. Finally, the filling is shaped and polished to give the tooth a natural appearance. Once completed, the patient will be able to resume their normal eating, brushing and flossing habits.
