Fluoride Applications

Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that is extremely effective in the prevention of tooth decay and the strengthening of tooth enamel. Individuals who are at a high risk of developing tooth decay can often benefit from topical fluoride applications.

Fluoride helps in two ways

  • Attaches to the enamel of teeth as a way of enhancing strength and resistance
  • Restores and remineralizes tooth enamel, which reverses tooth decay

The dental health experts at Bergenfield Dental provide patients at a high risk of developing tooth decay with topical fluoride applications that can help strengthen the teeth. These applications consist of a very simple procedure that can be completed in just one visit. The process involves using trays that are worn over the teeth to apply fluoride directly to the teeth or a painted on application in the form of a gel, foam or varnish. Once applied, the patient must refrain from eating or drinking anything for at least an hour afterward so that the fluoride can be fully absorbed by the teeth.

Topical fluoride applications are provided for many reasons, including:

  • Exposed or sensitive root surfaces
  • Deep grooves or fissures on the molars
  • Poor practices of oral hygiene
  • Lack of fluoride exposure
  • Excessive sugar intake
  • Prior occurrence of tooth decay
  • Inadequate saliva flow

In addition to topical fluoride applications, it is important to prevent tooth decay and cavities by brushing and flossing regularly and receiving professional teeth cleanings at least twice a year.
