Periodontics

Periodontics or periodontology is a special field of dentistry that concerns the structures that support the teeth, most notably the gums and mouth bones. Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is one of the most common oral health issues experienced by people today. The condition is marked by infection and inflammation of the gums. If periodontal disease is left untreated, the condition can spread to the jawbone and the connective tissues of teeth, eventually leading to tooth loss.

The most effective way to deal with periodontal disease is to seek treatment as soon as possible. The oral care experts at Bergenfield Dental recognize the seriousness of periodontal disease, and we provide multiple treatment options for patients suffering from this condition.

Gum Graft Surgery

One of the most effective treatment options for a receding gum line is gum graft surgery. As periodontal disease progresses, the gums typically pull away from the teeth, resulting in a receding gum line. Not only does this cause an unsightly appearance, it is also a serious oral health concern. When the gum line recedes, the roots of teeth become exposed, opening up the possibility for dangerous infections. A gum graft surgery fixes this issue by using tissue from another area of the mouth to cover up the exposed roots, while also restoring the natural appearance of the gums.

Laser Treatments

Periodontal laser treatments work by using a special dental laser to access and remove any inflamed gum tissue that is present around the root of a tooth. Once the inflamed gum tissue is removed, built-up plaque is scraped away, and rough spots are smoothed out to prevent future infections. After the area has been cleaned, the gum line will be able to regenerate during the healing process. Laser treatment is often a preferred method of treatment because there is less pain involved and the recovery times are shorter than with traditional treatments.

Dental Crown Lengthening

Dental crown lengthening is a cosmetic procedure that works by removing or reshaping excess gum and bone tissue to expose more of a patient’s natural tooth. This eliminates a “gummy” smile which is sometimes caused by an inflamed gum line. Dental crown lengthening can also be used to access teeth that have become damaged or decayed below the gum line, allowing them to be properly restored.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planning is a non-surgical procedure used to remove heavily built-up plaque, tartar and toxins from above and below the gum line. A local anesthetic may be used during the procedure to prevent the patient from experiencing pain. The process uses special dental tools to reach deep areas that are otherwise very difficult to access. Once the unwanted build up have been removed, future build up is prevented by smoothing out rough spots on the surfaces of the roots. Overall, scaling and root planning is highly-effective in controlling gum disease and preventing tooth loss.

Gum Surgery

Various surgical procedures may be recommended to patients with severe cases of periodontal disease. These procedures involve cutting into the gum line in order to conduct a deeper cleaning than one that can be provided through traditional scaling and root planing. The process typically involves cleaning deep below the gum line, removing excess gum tissue and using a gum graft to cover up exposed roots.
